Female Check Up
The doctor will probably ask you to undress partly or completely. The doctor will then do some or all of the following:
- Examine the external parts of the genitals
- Put a speculum inside the vagina to examine it and the cervix
- Take swabs from the vagina and/or cervix
- Give you a pap smear – a small spatula and brush are used to take samples from the cervix, and then placed on a small glass slide for testing (our health FAQ has more details about abnormal pap smears)
- An internal exam, placing fingers inside the vagina and the doctor’s other hand on the stomach in order to feel the ovaries and uterus
- take a urine sample
- take a blood sample
