When and Why
The doctor will probably ask you to undress partly or completely. The You should get a genital and pelvic exam:
- each year once you are participating in sex acts that involve genital contact – especially if you are having vaginal, anal or oral sex
- if you notice any changes in your genitals or anus that you cannot explain
- if you suspect an infection
- when you are starting or have just ended a relationship that involved sexual activity
You can also visit a clinic just to talk about puberty, losing your virginity, contraception and more.
People with disabilities
Unfortunately, some doctors still see people with disabilities as asexual. You may need to demand to get the treatment and information that you deserve. There are organizations and people who can guide you on how to do this. Talk to your local disability rights groups. Talk to the person in charge of youth programs where you receive health care or who works at the association for your disability. You can also talk to a therapist or counselor that you trust. And there is always new information on the web.
