During puberty, guys may get mild and temporary breast enlargement as their hormones figure out what they are doing.

Growth Stages for Female Breasts

Stage 1 - Birth to puberty

• Breasts are flat except for the nipples

Stage 2

• Nipples raise and may be more sensitive than before
• A breast bud forms underneath the nipple and may feel like a small lump
• The areola (circle around the nipple) gets larger
• One breast may begin developing before the other

Stage 3

• Breasts begin to grow
• Circle around the nipple continues to get larger
• This stage could last for months to a couple of years
• Breasts may be tender, sore or itchy as they grow

Stage 4

• Nipple and areola begin to stick out from the rest of the breast
• Breasts continue to grow

Stage 5

• Nipple and areola no longer stick out from the rest of the breast
• Breasts are smoothly rounded with the nipple at the point
• Breasts may not be the same size when they are finished growing

Breast Size

How big will they be?

• There are no dependable predictors
• Look at other women in the same family for an idea
• Growing breasts early doesn’t mean they will be larger

Does it matter?

No.

• There are pros to having large breasts
• There are pros to having smaller ones
• Different sizes are attractive to different people
