Breaking Up: How It's Done

When

  • Once you’ve decided to break up, it’s usually good to do it sooner than later.
  • Try to avoid birthdays, anniversaries and holidays if possible.
  • Do it before you tell other people.
  • If you feel safe to do so, it can be better to wait until the two of you have some time alone.

What to say

  • The truth – with an explanation if possible.
  • If you have anything nice to say, it could help to include it.
  • Don’t give false promises about friendship if you’re not sure you want one with the other person.

Reacting to reactions

  • If the other person is sad, you can comfort them if you want.
  • If they ask questions, you can talk about it, but you don’t have to.
  • If they use guilt or threats to make you change your mind, deal with it in the way you feel safest and most comfortable. It might be time to leave. Speak about the situation with someone you trust.
